New Summer Annual Seed Mix to Build Healthy Topsoil on our Indiana Farm

The rains this June have made it difficult to make the switch from ryegrass to summer annuals. The rains kept us out of the fields until Friday, but we are back at it.

The last few weeks on the farm we have transitioned to the summer annual plants. My beloved annual ryegrass grows well all Fall/Winter/Spring but when the temperature hits 85 degrees it seeds out and stops growing. Right now, we are going through a pretty significant heat wave.

So, we planted a 12-way blend of summer annuals to thrive during these summer months. Above I have included a pie chart of the different seeds used. This is the best way we've found to build topsoil on our southern Indiana farm.

The summer mix will be 5 feet tall in 45 days, stay tuned!
