Keeping Cattle Comfortable During an Indiana Winter

posted on

February 27, 2025

We are often asked how we keep our cattle comfortable during a typical Indiana winter. With our cattle free to graze year-round, we do not restrict their access to the outdoors due to weather like you might a domesticated animal. They are very intelligent, they know how to stay warm and keep their warmth to their middle sections.

Our job is to keep the hazards to a minimum while keeping our farm staff safe. We provide fresh, warm bedding in areas they want to congregate in. We make sure they have plenty of forage and access to water.

This winter has been a challenge, but we keep waking up to bitter cold temperatures and snow. The farm crew spends most of their time putting out straw for bedding, rolling out hay for eating and bedding as in this picture, busting ice off the top of our water troughs and getting all the cattle fed.

Our thanks and appreciation go out to Adam, Tony, Aaron, Evan and our part-time helper Jim for enduring cold temperatures each day to do this important work.

The Importance of Dry Dams on the Farm

Monday, we received 4.4 inches of rain, most of it overnight as heavy storms moved through. By Tuesday, I checked our dry dams to make sure everything was holding. The result was simple but telling- very little water had collected.

Braised Beef Short Ribs with Parmesan Polenta and Roasted Carrots Recipe

Few dishes capture comfort like braised short ribs. The aroma of slow-cooked beef, rich sauce, and creamy polenta creates that unmistakable feeling of a meal worth slowing down for. For this version, I used Fischer Farms bone-in short ribs- a mix of one single-bone and one double-bone cut- to showcase the versatility Fischer Farms offers chefs and home cooks alike.
