A key part of managing land that can be overlooked is how runoff from rain is controlled. The soil itself actually has a huge impact. Healthy dirt has the ability to capture the water vs. the water quickly draining off and eroding the fields. "Water holding capacity" is something we are looking to continually improve in our soils to help us get through droughts. We also use a series of ponds and wetlands, connected by creeks to slow the water down. Dry dams throughout the fields help us control heavy rains and prevent erosion. In this picture, our son, Kyle, is working on repairing a dry dam while we have some dry weather. Now we're ready for rain!!
