This week we started grazing the sorghum sudan grass.  This grass is native to Africa and loves the heat and doesn’t need much rain.  We’ve planted 45 acres this year and started 150 calves on it yesterday.  We planted it on June 23 and it’s 3 feet tall and beautiful to graze 32 days later!  We weighed all 150 calves before starting and will weigh again in 2 months when they are done grazing. This type grass has high energy content so we are expecting the calves to gain 2+ pounds per day and most importantly to maintain the marbling in their muscles.

We are having a farmer field day on August 11 4:30pm to hopefully spark the interest of other farmers.  Everyone is invited, just let us know if you plan to attend!

The Importance of Dry Dams on the Farm

Monday, we received 4.4 inches of rain, most of it overnight as heavy storms moved through. By Tuesday, I checked our dry dams to make sure everything was holding. The result was simple but telling- very little water had collected.

Braised Beef Short Ribs with Parmesan Polenta and Roasted Carrots Recipe

Few dishes capture comfort like braised short ribs. The aroma of slow-cooked beef, rich sauce, and creamy polenta creates that unmistakable feeling of a meal worth slowing down for. For this version, I used Fischer Farms bone-in short ribs- a mix of one single-bone and one double-bone cut- to showcase the versatility Fischer Farms offers chefs and home cooks alike.
